Immanuel Explorers create fond memories during Chicago adventure
January 9, 2025What happens when you take 37 adventurous seniors and five dedicated Immanuel employees on a five-day trip to one of America’s busiest and most entertaining cities? You get an unforgettable journey packed with exploration, connection, and fun.
The Immanuel Explorers provide exciting travel experiences, open to residents from all Immanuel communities to partake in adventures across the nation. This year, the Immanuel Explorers set their sights on Chicago, Illinois, turning every moment into an opportunity for discovery and camaraderie.
“These trips aren’t just about the destinations,” said Cameo Rogers, Immanuel Corporate Life Enrichment Manager. “They’re about bringing residents together to create memories, foster connections, and experience the joy of traveling with others.”
Day 1: A Delicious Start to the Journey
On Monday, September 16, 2024, the Explorers gathered at Immanuel Lakeside for a send-off breakfast featuring pastries, fresh fruit, and Starbucks coffee. Residents from Des Moines joined those from Omaha, Lincoln, and Papillion as the group’s motorcoach embarked on its journey. Along the way, participants enjoyed stories from their Allied Tour and Travel guide and engaged in a fun Selfie Challenge, a scavenger hunt that brought smiles and laughter throughout the trip.
Lunch at the iconic Iowa 80 Truck Stop provided a variety of meal options before the group arrived at Chicago’s historic Hampton Inn Majestic. Dinner at Giordano’s Pizza capped off the day with Caesar salad, chicken fettuccine alfredo, and iconic Chicago-style deep-dish pizza.
Day 2: Exploration and Elegance
Tuesday began with awe-inspiring exhibits at Chicago’s famous Field Museum. Participants enjoyed guided tours, a fascinating 3-D film about ocean life, and a bistro-style lunch before a well-deserved break at the hotel.
The evening brought glamour as Explorers dressed up for a dinner cruise on Lake Michigan. Dining on delicious entrees while dancing to a DJ’s mix of hits and classics, residents marveled at the serene harvest moon shining over the water.
“The dance floor was alive with energy, and our travelers truly embraced the moment,” said Cameo.
Day 3: Immersed in Chicago’s Culture
Wednesday offered a rich blend of history and sports. A guided city tour showcased iconic locations like Jackson Park, Buckingham Fountain, and Cloud Gate (“The Bean”). The group’s visit to Wrigley Field included VIP suites, a Cubs game, and classic Chicago Dogs.
Even though the Cubs didn’t win, the group had an incredible time cheering, singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” and even dancing to The Village People hit “YMCA.” Explorers left with smiles, memories, and plenty of souvenirs from the Wrigley gift shop.
Day 4: Art and Entertainment
Thursday’s itinerary began at the Chicago Art Institute, where Explorers admired masterpieces spanning centuries and cultures. The museum’s gift shop offered keepsakes to commemorate the visit.
The evening’s highlight was Teatro Zinzanni, a dinner show featuring comedy, acrobatics, and music. The circus-style venue dazzled with its mirrored tent and chandeliers. The group was captivated by the performers and thrilled to meet them for selfies afterward.
Day 5: Heartfelt Goodbyes
Friday marked the return home with a final stop at the Iowa Machine Shed in Davenport. Over a hearty family-style meal, Explorers shared laughs and reflected on the week. As the group dispersed, hugs and promises to reconnect soon underscored the bonds formed on the trip.
One resident summed up the experience perfectly: “Where are we going next … actually, it does not matter where. I am going!”
The Chicago adventure was more than a trip — it was a catalyst for growth and connection. One participant shared how the trip inspired them to join Immanuel’s fitness programs to build endurance. Another resident, recently bereaved, formed a meaningful new friendship. “I’m so glad I made a friend,” they shared.
As the Explorers look forward to their next journey, one thing is certain: these trips continue to enrich lives, build community, and create unforgettable moments.
“It was a superb trip in every way,” one Explorer said. “It was my first, and I am so glad I was along! Highest marks. I can’t wait to do it again. And again.”
