For many older adults, travel offers more than a change of scenery. It provides opportunities to stay engaged, build treasured relationships, and continue creating new memories. That spirit came to life this summer as 44 travelers (including 38 Immanuel Explorers, five staff members, and an Allied tour guide), embarked on an Alaska cruise adventure.
“Travel offers older adults a way to remain curious, embrace new experiences, and continue personal growth,” said Cameo Rogers, Immanuel Corporate Life Enrichment Manager. “At the same time, it brings residents and participants together, fostering friendships and bonds that can last well beyond the trip itself.”
From Omaha to Seattle
The adventure began on June 20 when the group departed Omaha for Seattle. After arriving in the Pacific Northwest, travelers gathered as the journey officially got underway.
The next day, the Explorers enjoyed a guided tour of Seattle led by a local expert who shared insights into the city’s history, culture, and economy. Along the way, the group viewed iconic landmarks, including the Space Needle and the stadium that hosted FIFA World Cup matches. A highlight for many was a stop at the Pike Place Market. Travelers watched the world-famous fishmongers at work, browsed colorful flower displays, and explored local shops and restaurants.
Following the city tour, the group made its way to the Port of Seattle to board the Star Princess, the newest Princess Cruises ship, and the largest ship of any cruise line sailing Alaska routes. For the next week, the ship would serve as both transportation and accommodations.
Settling into life at sea
Explorers were quickly impressed by the ship’s wide variety of amenities, dining venues, and entertainment options. Travelers enjoyed the spectacular scenery while attending wildlife presentations, listening to live music, and exploring the ship’s many decks.
One favorite daily tradition was gathering together for dinner in the Aurora Dining Room. The group enjoyed attentive service and a rotating menu featuring Alaskan salmon, lobster tail, shrimp, and an assortment of decadent desserts. The ship also featured an Irish pub, piano lounge, theatrical performances, and live Latin music.
For first-time Explorer traveler Joyce Redman, a resident at Trinity Village, the welcoming atmosphere stood out as much as the destination itself. She praised the Immanuel staff members who assisted residents along the way.
“They were all amazing, and always willing to help with smiles on their faces!” she said.
After a night sailing through the Inside Passage, the Explorers arrived at one of the highlights of the trip: Endicott Arm. This 30-mile fjord is known for its steep granite cliffs, waterfalls and views of Dawes Glacier. It was one of the area's most impressive tidewater glaciers.
Wildlife encounters in Ketchikan and Juneau
The first port of call was Ketchikan, Alaska, where travelers selected from a variety of memorable excursions. Some joined a fishing adventure featuring cast members of the television show Deadliest Catch. Others explored the region by boat, spotting bald eagles, harbor seals, and even a humpback whale that surfaced near their vessel.
Guests also sampled local treats, including smoked salmon dip and pickled kelp, while taking in Alaska’s remarkable coastal beauty. Meanwhile, those attending the famous lumberjack show enjoyed plenty of laughter and impressive displays of skill and strength.
The wildlife encounters continued in Juneau, Alaska, where many Explorers participated in whale-watching excursions. Seeing humpback whales in the water alongside seals and orcas proved to be one of the most memorable experiences of the trip. For many travelers, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness Alaska’s natural beauty up close.
Adventures in Skagway
In Skagway, Alaska, travelers could participate in mountain adventures and other uniquely Alaskan experiences. Some visited a musher’s camp, where they learned about sled dog training, met retired racing dogs, and even held 10-week-old Husky puppies. The most attended excursion of the trip was the White Pass Scenic Railway. The ride offered breathtaking views of mountains, valleys, and waterfalls as it climbed into the rugged wilderness.
Margie O’Connor, a Deerfield resident and a frequent Explorers traveler, said the different sights offered a unique experience for her.
“The totem poles were awesome. The details and the designs were amazing … They were beautiful,” she said. “I thought that the train ride was an experience not to be forgotten and I saw things from a different perspective. We saw so many whales in the water. The eagles were wonderful to watch as they soared in the sky, and the fish market was amazing!”
A colorful finale in Victoria
The final port stop brought the group to Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Many travelers visited the renowned Butchart Gardens, strolling among vibrant displays of flowers, trees, and carefully curated landscapes. Others explored Fisherman's Wharf, where colorful floating homes, local vendors, and busy water taxis created a charming waterfront atmosphere.
The shared experiences throughout the trip helped create lasting bonds among travelers and staff alike.
“If you are going with the Immanuel Explorers, you are going to be treated like royalty. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and be willing to treat the staff as friends. If they aren’t friends to begin with, they will be at the end!”

Memories that last beyond the journey
For Fran Olson of The Landing, the experience exceeded expectations in a deeply personal way.
“I thought I would never cruise again, and this made that wish come true,” she said about the trip. “Aides were always there when I needed help. I’m so glad to have had the opportunity to travel.”
After returning to Seattle, the group finished the adventure with one final guided tour and lunch near the Ballard Locks before heading home. While the stunning scenery, wildlife encounters, and excursions created unforgettable memories, the true highlight for many was the sense of community that developed along the way.
“One of the things that makes Immanuel Explorers special is that we travel as a community,” Cameo said. “Residents and staff spend quality time together, share meals, celebrate new experiences, and support one another along the way. Those relationships become one of the most meaningful parts of every trip.”
