Understanding what makes a memory support community feel like home

Searching for memory support can bring a mix of emotions. For many families, it's not just about finding care. It's about finding a place where a loved one will feel safe, respected, and understood.

If you're beginning to ask questions about what comes next, Immanuel’s Guide to Memory Support can help you better understand care options and what to look for as you navigate this journey. Sometimes, having reliable information is the first step toward greater peace of mind.

Look for an environment that feels like home

A quality memory support community should be designed with residents' daily experiences in mind. Simple features such as clear signage, calming colors, familiar surroundings, and secure outdoor spaces can help reduce anxiety and support independence.

When touring a community, pay attention to more than the floor plan. Consider whether the space feels comfortable, welcoming, and easy to navigate.

    Ask questions about care

The people providing care have the greatest impact on a resident's experience. Ask about staff training, ongoing education, caregiver availability throughout the day, and how changes in a resident's needs are communicated to families.

It's also important to learn how the community approaches nutrition, hydration, and daily engagement. The best programs adapt to changing needs while continuing to honor personal preferences and routines.

Families should remain part of the journey

Memory support works best when families are treated as partners, not spectators. Open communication, educational resources, and ongoing conversations can help loved ones feel informed and supported as needs evolve.

Brian, whose parents live in an Immanuel memory support community, shared:

"Having the ability to move from independent living to assisted living, and then to memory support has made things so much easier for my parents. Every time I see my mother, she has a smile on her face."

A decision you don't have to rush

Immanuel’s memory support communities are built around the person, not just the diagnosis. Interdisciplinary care teams work together to support residents' physical, emotional, spiritual, and cognitive well-being. At the same time, families remain actively involved throughout the process.

Most importantly, exploring memory support doesn't mean you're committing to a move. It simply means you're gathering information and preparing for the future. For a deeper look at memory loss, caregiving, and memory support, explore our downloadable resource, A Guide to Memory Support.
