Grand Lodge residents and staff collect donations for California wildfire victims

Residents of Grand Lodge in Lincoln, Nebraska, recently came together to organize a successful donation drive for those affected by the Southern California wildfires.

Since January 7, 2025, Southern California has been battling devastating wildfires, resulting in at least 29 deaths and forcing over 200,000 evacuations. The wildfires have damaged or destroyed more than 16,000 structures, exacerbated by drought conditions, low humidity, and strong Santa Ana winds. This situation has made relief efforts more important than ever.

“We were expressing concerns about the victims of the vicious wildfires in California,” said Jen Davidson, a Grand Lodge resident. “The opportunity arose to send those who had lost everything much needed clothes and shoes by way of my lifelong friend in a senior community like ours in Pasadena.”

To facilitate the donation process, a designated room was set up at Grand Lodge for residents and staff to contribute new or gently used clothing and shoes. For those who couldn't donate items, monetary contributions were accepted to help cover delivery costs and purchase essential supplies like socks and underwear.

The initiative gained momentum when the son of a resident who recently passed away, who owns a trucking company, offered to transport the collected items to California at a discounted rate. With the truck scheduled to arrive in Lincoln by January 22, residents quickly rallied to gather donations.

Two residents also coordinated with a local Hy-Vee store to collect empty boxes for packing.

“We sprang into action and in a matter of a few days, we packed and shipped 43 boxes, almost 900 pounds, of clothes and shoes to my friend and her fellow residents to distribute, right in the heart of the Eaton fire area,” Jen said.

The dedication of Grand Lodge residents and employees to support those affected by the wildfires highlights the strong sense of service Immanuel communities foster. Together, we strive to make a meaningful impact during challenging times.

“I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of such a generous community,” said Grand Lodge Executive Director Lisa Henning.
